Quality Manager

What’s it all about?

Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will drive quality standards and lead and develop the quality and food safety related systems and procedures according to legal, corporate and customer requirements in accordance with the SPIRIT of the business ensuring zero harm to consumers and employees. You will lead the Quality team to ensure all tasks are carried out in a manner to deliver quality, food safety, legality and integrity of products manufactured. You will manage the performance and personal development of the Quality Performance Leads to drive behaviours aligned with our values and capabilities that deliver our future requirements.

Key Accountabilities 

  • Actively manage the Food Safety Quality Management System, including procedures, standards operating procedures and records in line with relevant standards.
  • Develop a motivated, engaged and high performing team, supporting the development of Quality Performance Leads through coaching and training. Manage all aspects of the team through individual training plans. Manage performance that is below the standard expected and where necessary invoke disciplinary procedures.
  • Champion the sites quality performance strategy, including CPMU reduction initiatives, driving continuous improvement activities to drive year on year improvements.
  • Responsible for ensuring all non-conformances are raised and documented, that root cause analysis is conducted effectively to determine corrective actions and actions managed to completion. Develop a strategy for year-on-year reduction. Lead decision maker for quality incidents including product quality evaluation.
  • Build strong relationships with key functions across the site, as well as with external stakeholders throughout the business and ensure excellent customer facing relationships are maintained with our own label customers.
  • Provide leadership for Food Safety across the site teams and positively influence the progression of a behaviour-based food safety culture at Bardney. Ensure the site remains audit ready for internal and external 3rd party audits including BRCGS, IFS, Kosher, Femas all retailers and legislative bodies. In liaison with the other site functions complete gap analysis required against standards and ensure appropriate action plans are in place.
  • Lead the coordination and management of the Pest Control services. To include contractor management, organising implementation of contractor recommendations and satisfactory adherence to standards.
  • Support training and development to the whole site team development plans with regard to Quality and Food Safety. Understand and identify technically related training requirements at all levels in the business (e.g. HACCP, food hygiene) to ensure that all employees are properly equipped to undertake their roles.
  • Manage change; new products, new recipes, new processes, new standards, new systems or any changes to existing products.
  • Manage intake of and quality of, raw materials, packaging and finished goods including the effective management of non-conforming product and ensure compliance with good manufacturing standards.
  • Lead the site’s Food Defence team, creating and maintaining the Food Defence Plan.
  • Understand and implement the quality and food safety requirements of a leading branded company.
  • Effectively pass information down the line to concerned teams for smoother execution.
  • Collate and analyse key data in order to make sound and responsible decisions particularly in the area of product release.
  • Educate and provide expert quality knowledge to the manufacturing teams as well as the management team.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement regarding GMP and hygiene.

Experience and Skills

  • Food Science related degree or working towards this
  • Proven Quality management experience
  • Food manufacturing experience
  • Thorough understanding of food legislation and nutrition
  • Internal auditing ability
  • HACCP trained to Intermediate Level
  • Knowledge of Allergen, Vendor Assurance, Process Contaminants, Organic Management and working knowledge of British Retail Consortium standards

You might also have: 

  • HS&E qualification
  • Project management experience
