What’s it all about?

The Lead Shift Engineer is accountable for prioritizing and completing engineering maintenance, repairs and continuous improvement of manufacturing equipment, plant, and facilities on a day-to-day basis. To ensure the delivery of production volumes and efficiencies whilst maintaining high safety and quality standards.

 The Lead Shift Engineer will take a lead in H&S and be of technical assistance to the Operating and Hygiene teams.

 Maintain and repair all plant & equipment.

  • Provide an effective and rapid solution to down time.
  • Request appropriate parts and spares, using the correct Stores procedures.
  • Ensure that any potential problems are reported and subsequently followed up.
  • Generate and complete work orders using the maintenance system.
  • Ensure all relevant work is accurately recorded on the maintenance system.
  • Carry out maintenance as and when the situation dictates.
  • Inform your line manager of the cause, and anticipated duration of down time.
  • Provide technical support when requested.
  • Assist in-house or contract labour on engineering projects.
  • Assist in commissioning.

Key Accountabilities 

  • Act as lead for shift team, ensuring that the technicians are deployed to maximise production and reduce downtime.
  • Deputise for Engineering Supervisor when required, to include weekend supervision. Organising and deploying Technician team for Production running requirements when required according to the priority list.
  • Role model for Health Safety & Environment and Food Hygiene.
  • Follow all Quality systems and procedures to ensure our products meet food safety (HACCP), legal and customer requirements as well as maintaining external standards e.g., BRC, IFS, Femes.
  • Proactively promote a positive Health & Safety culture, leading towards a target of zero harm for JDR personnel and contractors.
  • Responsible for adhering to safe systems of work processes and acting in a safe manner to protect the health and safety of yourself and others at all times.

  • To promote a culture of positive safety behaviours within your team, demonstrate strong safety leadership and address unsafe behaviours and working practices to coach the right behaviours.
  • Working closely with the Production Shift Manager(s) providing process and technical support and maintaining effective communication with all relevant parties including Production teams and Engineering Supervisor relationship.
  • Ensure that maintenance and breakdowns are carried out to the highest standard of Good Manufacturing Practice and in according with good housekeeping and Health and Safety procedures.
  • Provide expert technical expertise with respect to providing training, coaching, and mentoring of operators, junior engineers and apprentices.
  • Respond immediately to plant downtime and inform Shift Managers of cause, and anticipated duration of downtime.
  • Provide an effective and rapid solution to downtime, identify performance problems and possible areas of improvement.
  • Maintain an effective planned maintenance system for the site wide function.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient achievement of operational availability targets in accordance with the needs of the business.
  • Ensure that all changes to plant and equipment are co-ordinated through management of change.
  • Actively participate in the JDR energy reduction commitment looking for ways to reduce energy consumption.
  • Ensure all relevant work is accurately recorded on the maintenance system.
  • Provide technical or process support including manual process functions when requested.
  • Assist in-house or contract labour on engineering projects.
  • Actively maintain awareness on production performance/yield, rectifying any losses as a result of engineering problems or process machinery setting requirements.
  • Effective communication with the engineering teams at shift handovers to ensure continuity of technical issues across shift so that informed decisions can be made.
  • To work as a flexible and motivated member of the engineering team
  • Participate in meetings whenever requested.
  • Ensure that the designated working area is always kept clean and tidy maintaining a professional image.
  • Ensure that the security policy is always implemented and maintained.
  • Undertake any other activity deemed appropriate by the Maintenance & Reliability Manager in the pursuit of continuous improvement.

Experience and Skills

  • Nationally recognised electrical qualifications (E.g., City & Guilds Level 3 diploma)
  • Nationally recognised qualification in mechanical or electrical discipline (NVQ L2 / City & Guilds) (preferable)
  • Broad knowledge of modern maintenance techniques.
  • Wide ranging knowledge of engineering practical fundamentals.
  •  5 years post qualification industry experience
