Process Development Manager

What’s it all about?

The core focus of this role is to optimise process control at Bardney, to allow for a high quality of product to be created every time.  There is a heavy presence on the shop floor required with at least 65% of time being focused on the education of process operators and the monitoring and improvement of processes that come before the exit of the oven on both CB and Thins.

A successful individual will lead and deliver new process development projects for Bardney ensuring the scale up trails allow for successful running to meet site KPIs. They will be the key link between then NPD team and the factory involved from project concepts through to full scale running at site. Ensuring they are available for trials, as well as supporting the first few weeks in full production.

The final focus of the role is to work with Operations, Engineering and Technical on site to look at process and technical improvement projects which will benefit the site KPIs or give a cost reduction opportunity.

The role will report to the site operations manager and be part of the middle management structure who are responsible for the successful running of the factory on a week-to-week basis.

Key Accountabilities

  • To deliver an education program for all process operators which allows them to be experts in their field.
  • To deliver a monitoring process to assess how well our standards are being adhered to and implement ways to improve based on the findings.
  • To lead process and technical development projects to improve and maintain product quality and productivity in our factories, including owning process benchmarking documents and auditing against these to assess level of process control.
  • Support NPD projects by ensuring smooth and successful scale-up of kitchen recipes to plant, in partner with the product development team, liaising with the Capital team where applicable. Where required work with the capitals team to compile URS documents.
  • Lead the product sign off for commissioning during capital projects.
  • Create a program of CI initiatives to have better process control or improve efficiency, working with CI manager and Ops manager to select those which will have the biggest benefit, allowing a continuous program of improvements to be delivered.
  • Feed into Innovation strategy by supplying process technology ideas to produce new concepts - involved in idea generation and scoping of projects at kick-off.
  • Be trouble-shooter for all day-to-day process issues on plants, where due to process technology and control.
  • Ensure “right first time” approach to product and process launches and to product quality, with a continuous improvement approach to project processes.
  • Attend key exhibitions and events to stay on top of developments in technologies applicable to our processes
  • Accountable for promoting and driving a health & safety and food safety culture and ensuring all policies and processes are implemented and adhered to.
  • Ensures that the operation complies with all legislation and ethical standards with regards to safety, food safety, quality, environmental and employee legislation.
  • Drives and sustains an environment of Continuous Improvement and Operational Excellence from operator level right through to the senior team.
  • Works closely with other functions such as Marketing and Procurement to ensure active involvement in developing and improving products and process to ensure the flexibility of the manufacturing facilities to be able to deliver business growth plans.

Experience and Skills

·       Food Science related degree or equivalent qualification (desired).

·       Minimum 3 years’ experience in technical or process technology development (essential).

·       Ability to travel occasionally between manufacturing sites (desired).

·       Experience in product development or Technical  role (desired).

·       Experience of working in a factory environment promoting a change of working methods.

·       Solid understanding of product development processes including stage & gate process, trial process, new RM sign off.

·       Previous involvement in commissioning of new manufacturing equipment.
